Re: A-2667/S-1756, as amended
Recruitment of Minors

Dear Member of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee:

The League of Municipalities fully supports adoption of A-2667/S-1756, as amended,  which upgrades to a crime of the second degree recruiting a minor to be in a criminal street gang.

This bill is an important component of the “Fighting Gangs, Protecting Our Youth” gang deterrence initiative. It focuses on the all important comprehensive strategy of law enforcement and prevention and sends a strong message to the criminal element that New Jersey will not tolerate any attempt to recruit or threaten young people to join criminal street gangs.

We commend  the sponsors and all Legislators for their commitment to protecting our youth from those whose aim is to continue destructive behavior in communities across the state.

Accordingly, the League urges passage of A-2667/S-1756.

Very Truly Yours,

William G. Dressel, Jr.
Executive Director
