Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Eliminates Fees for Use of (Dot) Gov Domain

Posted on May 5, 2021 at 3:39 PM by Legislative Staff

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) announced last week that it would no longer assess registration or renewal fees for use of its .gov web domain, in an effort to increase .gov adoption by smaller government entities. Prior to the policy change, the registration cost for use of the .gov domain was $400.  From April 26, 2021 through at least the end of FY 2021, CISA will not charge registrants any fees, including renewal fees.

This is an important step to provide information on a safe platform that previously was cost prohibitive for some local governments.  Local governments have previously raised the cost to CISA as a barrier to adoption, particularly for small entities. More information about the change, how local governments can make the migration, and what federal assistance may be available to fund other costs related to the migration, are available on CISA's website.
