The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) at the U.S. Department of Justice announced several COPS funding opportunities for eligible local police departments. Each funding opportunity is a two-step process at grants.gov and the JustGrants – the justice grants system.
COPS Hiring Program (CHP)
The FY 2022 COPS Hiring Program (CHP) is currently open. The first deadline at grants.gov is June 9, and the second-step deadline at JustGrants is June 16.
This competitive grant program is designed to provide funding directly to law enforcement agencies to hire and/or rehire additional career law enforcement officers in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
Anticipated outcomes of the CHP program awards include engagement in planned community partnerships, implementation of projects to analyze and assess problems, implementation of changes to personnel and agency management in support of community policing, and increased capacity of agency to engage in community policing activities.
School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP)
The FY 2022 School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP) is currently open. The first deadline at grants.gov is June 14, and the second step at JustGrants is due June 21.
The Students, Teachers, and Officers Preventing School Violence Act of 2018 (STOP School Violence Act of 2018) gave the COPS Office authority to provide awards directly to states, units of local government, or Indian tribes to improve security at schools and on school grounds under the jurisdiction of the grantee through evidence-based school safety programs and technology.
The COPS Office has invested more than $14 billion to advance community policing, including grants awarded to more than 13,000 state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to fund the hiring and redeployment of more than 134,000 officers. COPS Office information resources, covering a wide range of community policing topics such as school and campus safety, violent crime, and officer safety and wellness, can be downloaded via the COPS Office’s home page
