Final NJ Census Push in Full Swing

There are just a few weeks remaining until the Census ends on September 30.

Across the state, Census takers are knocking on the doors of those households that have not yet responded. New Jersey is officially in the midst of the final Get Out The Count (GOTC) effort and your help is urgently needed.

The state as a whole continues to run at about 2 percentage points above the national self-response rate. Because of the impact of COVID-19 there is still significant room for growth in the self-response number in every municipality across the state.

The Census Bureau estimates that for each person counted, your communities receive approximately $1,800/year. In a town of 10,000 that means $18 million annually and $180 million over the next 10 years. The more people that are counted mean a greater chance of receiving New Jersey’s fair share of federal dollars over the next 10 years.

Here are the action steps you can take to make sure New Jersey is counted:

  • First and foremost, please make a continual effort to ask all of your constituents who haven’t already filled out their Census to fill it out now!
  • Residents can avoid a Census taker knocking on their door by responding to the Census right now online at https://2020census.gov/ or by phone at 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Spanish). There is phone support for 14 additional languages as well as a TDD for the hearing impaired. These can be found at https://nj.gov/state/census.shtml.
  • Promote and participate in Census-related activities in your communities.
  • Plan a Census activity that is designed to help people fill out their Census. The NJ Census 2020 Team can help you with that and can be reached at https://nj.gov/state/census-resources.shtml.
  • Challenge a neighboring municipality to a friendly competition to see who can increase the self-response rate the most between communities.
  • Create a brief social media video and post it on your pages and websites.
  • Create and share Census themed social media posts on a regular basis. You can use the materials provided weekly by the NJ Census 2020 Team at the NJ Department of State. Use the hashtags #NJCensus2020 and #NJGOTC and they will like and share your posts. You can also find NJ Census information at www.Census.NJ.Gov
