Earlier this week, League President and Millstone Borough Mayor Raymond Heck; Newark City Council President LaMonica McIver; Lori Buckelew, NJLM Deputy Executive Director and Director of Government Affairs; and Paul Penna, NJLM Senior Legislative Analyst participated in the National League of Cities (NLC) Congressional City Conference (CCC) in Washington D.C. and met with members of the New Jersey congressional delegation to discuss League priorities.
The group met with Congressmen Pascrell, Kean, and Pallone; as well as with staff from the offices of Senator Menendez, Senator Booker, Congresswoman Watson Coleman, and Congresswoman Sherrill to discuss League federal priorities including:
- Lifting the deduction cap on State and Local Taxes (SALT),
- Long term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP),
- Ensuring there is no claw back of unspent American Rescue Plan State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF), and
- Reauthorization of the Farm Bill to protect nutrition programs.
When discussing the possibility of clawing back unspent American Rescue Plan State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds it was advised that even though municipalities have until December 31, 2024, to obligate the funds, they should make efforts to commit the funds for spending as soon as possible.
