With the resignation of Senator Menendez effective this past Tuesday, August 20, 2024, his seat in the U.S. Senate is currently vacant. Governor Murphy announced his intention to appoint George Helmy to the U.S. Senate.
Helmy served as Chief of Staff to Governor Murphy from 2019 to 2023 and previously served as Senator Booker’s State Director and as a staff assistant and constituent advocate for Senator Lautenberg. He will be sworn in when the Senate reconvenes in September, tentatively September 9, and has stated he will resign once this November’s election is certified so Governor Murphy can appoint the winner of this November’s Senate election.
