[ARCHIVED] Social Security Fairness Act Law Resources

As we reported last week, President Biden signed the Social Security Fairness Act. The Government Finance Officers of New Jersey shared the following resources:

  • Nationwide, 40% of teachers and 75% of public safety personnel are not covered by Social Security. However, there are non-covered employees in every state and some states where most public employees are not covered.
  • The Social Security Administration (SSA) will be updating its website with instructions for individuals affected by the Government Pension Offset/Windfall Elimination Provision.
  • House Ways and Means Chairman Jason Smith and Subcommittee on Social Security Chairman Ron Estes wrote to SSA asking that they answer some questions regarding how they will implement the offset and provision.
  • As for impacts on public employers, there are no changes listed on the SSA website for state and local employers.

We encourage you to share this information with your Finance Officer and municipal manager.
