As we previously reported[LB1] , the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) would expire on September 30. It is anticipated that another short-term extension will be included in the continuing resolution to fund the government.
During this lapse:
- NFIP cannot sell new or renew flood insurance policies after 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on September 30, 2025.
- Existing NFIP policies will remain in effect until their expiration date, and claims will continue to be paid as long as FEMA has the funds on hand.
- Renewal policies are generally issued if the application and premium are received prior to a lapse. Other renewals and policies expiring after a lapse must wait for reauthorization.
The League has long advocated for a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP, passing conference resolutions, including in 2023 and routinely speaking to our congressional representatives about its importance to New Jersey’s economy.
We will continue to monitor this situation and report as issues develop.
