Federal Budget Update
Reports out of Washington this morning are indicating that it is looking like a government shut down is inevitable. Later today Congress will be voting on short-term spending bill that is more in line with the $1.47 trillion spending plan from the Congressional Freedom Caucus then the debt limit deal struck over the summer that set the discretionary spending cap at $1.59 trillion.

Mayor Bollwage Testified Before Congressional Committe
Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage, NJLM Past President, testified before a House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Wednesday on the Brownfields Program Reauthorization.

Keynote Confirmed: Governor Murphy to Speak at League Luncheon

The League is Now Accepting Applications for the 2023 Innovation in Governance Awards Program!
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) and the New Jersey League of Municipalities (NJLM) will again acknowledge and promote Innovation in Governance through our annual recognition program. This is a great opportunity to showcase innovative solutions to any problems that have cropped up – either suddenly or over time – in your municipality. It can also be an opportunity to let your peers in on innovations that prevented problems from arising. The Innovation in Governance Awards Committee is looking for any new and distinctive approaches in any department of municipal government. This year you can apply through our new online application process, or simply print and send it via e-mail or mail! Apply soon as the nomination deadline is Friday, October 20, 2023.

Mayors Alliance to Combat Summer Hunger Webinar Announced
Join the Mayors Alliance to Combat Summer Hunger and (USDA) for a free webinar briefing on how mayors can support programs helping to meet the nutritional needs of children during the summer months.
The Mayors Alliance to Combat Summer Hunger, in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), invites you to a free webinar on October 11, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. This online event will offer updates and guidance on how mayors can support implementation of nutritional support for children throughout the summer months.
During summer, nearly 30 million children lose access to the nutritious meals supplied by the USDA's school breakfast and lunch programs. Recognizing this issue, Congress has enabled states with two significant new tools to combat summer childhood hunger.
Certain rural communities can now provide children with summer meals through a convenient "grab and go" or home delivery model. Beginning in summer 2024, states will have the opportunity to participate in the permanent, nationwide summer EBT program. This initiative will offer grocery benefits to households with eligible children during the summer, ensuring continued access to nutritious meals.
