On January 9 at 3:30 p.m., Governor Murphy delivered the State of the State address in the Assembly Chamber at the State House in Trenton.

Bills of Interest on the Governor’s Desk

With the 2022-2023 Legislative term ending on January 9, Governor Murphy must take action by noon on January 16 on a variety of bills.

Flood Mitigation Program Now Taking Applications on Rolling Basis

The DCA has announced that effective immediately the Mitigation Assistance Program will accept applications on a rolling basis from homeowners in flood-prone areas and interested in elevating their homes to reduce their risk of flooding.

Federal Issues

Potential Partial Federal Government Shutdown Next Week

Without congressional action next week, budgetary funding for parts of the federal government, including the departments of Transportation, Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Veterans Affairs, expires on January 19.

EPA Accepting Comments on Drinking Water Regulations

The EPA has released a Proposed Rule for National Primary Drinking Water Regulations for Lead and Copper: Improvements (LCRI) and is accepting comments on the proposed rule through Feb. 5.

EPA Announces Appointments to Local Government Advisory Committee

This week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the appointment of 16 new members to the Local Government Advisory Committee, as well as the reappointments of 13 existing members, including members from New Jersey.

NJDA Spotted Lanternfly Chemical Control Treatment Grant  

The New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA) has announced up to $20,000 per municipality grant funding for the Spotted Lanternfly Chemical Control Treatment program for the 2024-2026 treatment season.

Show Off Your City Contest Deadline Feb. 9 

The Annual Show Off Your City Contest is accepting entries through February 9. Municipalities are invited to send in photos of their tourist attractions, downtown areas, economic development initiatives, parks, city halls, community groups and new projects.

Entries will be posted on the League’s Facebook page, website, and some will be featured in the April issue of NJ Municipalities, and possibly other issues. The winner will also receive a free League publication of their choice!

Photos can be submitted via the form on the league website, email to aspiezio@njlm.org, or mailed on a flash drive to 222 West State Street, Trenton, NJ 08608. For full details, visit the Show Off Your City Contest webpage.
